What each system does
- GSAT-7C: PIB says it will enhance secure, resilient and seamless communication for Indian Air Force assets. A dedicated military satellite reduces dependence on shared or commercial links.
- Varunastra: According to PIB, it has advanced manoeuvring capabilities and can engage enemy submarines at long ranges, strengthening Navy anti-submarine warfare.
Why contracts with NSIL and BDL?
NSIL is the space PSU that commercialises space capabilities, and BDL is a defence PSU. Both contracts therefore keep production in Indian public-sector hands, which fits the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India' vision that PIB cites.
Why it matters for UPSC
- GS3: defence indigenisation, space technology for security, role of public sector undertakings.
- GS3 and GS2: acquisition process and the role of the Department of Defence.
- Prelims: know the ship-launched, anti-submarine role of Varunastra and the NSTL (DRDO) link, and which service gets which asset.
Mains angle
Question: "Indigenisation of defence procurement strengthens both security and industry." Discuss with recent examples. Points: dedicated military satcom for resilience, indigenous torpedo capability, PSU role, and limits such as technology gaps and delivery timelines.
