BREAKING THE STIGMA : UNDERSTANDING LEPROSY AND THE STEPS FOR ELIMINATION

Leprosy is also known as Hansen's disease is chronic bacterial infection that affects skin, nerves, and mucous membranes . It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae .

The exact cause of leprosy is unknown , but it is believed to be transmitted through respiratory droplets when close contact with an infected person . People with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of contracting the disease.

To prevent the spread of leprosy it is important to practice good hygiene and avoid close contact with infected individuals . The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends early detection and treatment with multi drug therapy (MDT) , Which is highly effective in curing the disease and preventing transmission.

In India the government has implemented various measures to prevent and control leprosy . This includes conducting regular health check - ups , providing free treatment and drugs , and creating awareness about disease through various campaigns . The National Leprosy Eradication Programme  was launched in 1983, with the goal of eliminating leprosy as public health problem.

At the global level , WHO is working towards eliminating leprosy as a public health issue by 2023. This is being achieved through various initiatives, such as increasing access to MDT , strengthening surveillance and case detection, and improving community - based rehabilitation services for those affected by leprosy.

By practicing good hygiene , early detection and treatment along with awareness about the disease this can be prevented.
