PHYTOPLANKTON : THE UNSUNG HEROES OF THE MARINE ECOSYSTEM
Phytoplankton play a crucial role in earth's climate and biogeochemical cycles. They are responsible for about half of the total photosynthesis that occur on earth, and their growth and decay process help to regulate the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere . Additionally they produce a significant amount of oxygen , which is essential for the survival of many species , including humans.
There are several different types of phytoplankton , including diatoms, dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria. Each type has a unique set of characteristic and plays a different role in the ecosystem. For example diatoms are an important food source for many marine animals , while dinoflagellates are known to produce harmful; algal blooms.
Phytoplankton populations can fluctuate greatly in response to environmental changes in temperature, salinity and nutrient levels. The ocean absorbs about 25% of the anthropogenic carbon dioxide emitted by human activities, and as a result , the ocean is becoming more acidic , which can have a negative impact on phytoplankton populations and the entire marine food web. Climate change also affects phytoplankton growth and diversity , as rising sea temperatures and changing ocean currents can alter the distribution of different phytoplankton species.
