WHAT IS RIVER POLLUTION?

 

Water pollution , the release of substances into subsurface , groundwater or into lakes, streams, rivers , estuaries and oceans to the point where substances interfere with beneficial use of the water or with the natural functioning of ecosystem.

River pollution refers to polluting rivers.

The most significant stretches of pollution highlighted by Central Pollution Control Board are;

  • The Mithi river from Powai to Dharavi
  • The Godavari from  Someshwar to Rahed
  • The Sabarmati from, Kheroj to Vautha
  • The Hindon from Saharanpur to Ghaziabad

BOD

BOD is the amount of dissolved oxygen needed by bacteria in decomposing the organic wastes present in water. It is expressed in milligrams of oxygen per litre of water. The higher value of Bod indicates low Dissolved Oxygen content of water.
